I am the fourth generation of a five generation military family (my son is a Marine), and those in my family who did not join the service have volunteered as firefighters. My mom is a VA registered nurse, so I guess you could say service is in my blood.
My favorite place to be stationed was Kaiserslautern, Germany. The culture is amazing. Downtown has several older churches and buildings that still bear battle scars from World War II bombings. During this tour of duty, I was able to ski in the Alps, enjoy Oktoberfest in Munich, climb the Eagle's Nest in Berchtesgaden, contemplate humanity at the Dachau concentration camp, and attend the Flag Remembrance (retirement) ceremony at the U.S. it. Military cemetery in Normandy, France, where General Patton, among thousands of other Americans, rests.
I'm the oldest of six, and I didn't want to burden my parents to help me pay for college, so I worked hard in high school JROTC to earn a full college ROTC scholarship at Georgia Military College. Two of my siblings followed me into the military after high school and both earned degrees through the service or GI Bill. I am also an ENTJ personality type, just like General Patton, so the Army was a perfect place for me to learn the discipline of a young leader.
I received the Bronze Star, an award that "logistics" officers don't get very often. There is a similar non-combat award called the Meritorious Service Medal, which is generally awarded for outstanding work during a combat deployment at the 1LT-CPT level. The nature of the fighting in Ar Ramadi, Iraq, turned my traditional "logistics" world on its head. I led convoys down what Time Magazine called "the most dangerous highway in the world." I had to call in airlifts, receive medivacs, small arms and sniper fire, initiated several IEDs on my convoys, lost two HMMWVs, but never lost a soldier under my command.

Do you think your leadership role in the military helped you in the production management role at Valvoline? If so, how?
I really believe it helped me. Military professionals conduct themselves in a manner that builds respect. You will learn how to be invisible in service and how to be a true service provider because people are not your "employees", they are your brothers and sisters. You are not only responsible for their performance, but also their life. This carries over into the civilian world. When most people think of the military, they think of a drill sergeant yelling in a private, but that's not me. I never call; I don't need No matter how tough a situation, conflict or challenge there is in my civilian job, it pales in comparison to the challenges of leading troops in war. With this property, no challenge is too big, and no matter what, we can get through it.
Along with several generals and presidents, there are several American heroes in my family. My grandfather, John Wagner, served as an infantryman in Korea - he was a man that everyone looked up to. My father was a volunteer firefighter for over 40 years, and is still serving locally at 65 years old. He inspired my two brothers, Casey and Ken, to serve as firefighters as well and both are active volunteers in their departments. My mother was a Department of Veterans Affairs Registered Nurse for over 30 years in many challenging roles. My uncle Don Wagner just retired after serving 32 years in the Air Force - he gave me my first salute as an officer. He was like a second father, and he inspired my two other brothers, Tim and Don, to serve. Tim served 12 years in multiple overseas combat or humanitarian tours, and Don W. is currently serving as a Staff Sergeant in the Air Force while applying for officer candidate school after completing his bachelor's degree. My Aunt Tish is medically retired from the Army after a tough tour of duty as a combat medic in Afghanistan. And finally, my son, Dustin, is a Marine reservist and is in college studying to become a pilot, and it fills me with pride that he volunteered to serve his country.
My first car was a 1984 Nissan 240SX with a 5 speed manual transmission and sunroof. I took it to the Georgia Military College at 17 years old. Ironically, I blew the engine on it because it ran too long without an oil change. I have been religious about oil changes ever since.

I grew up in a patriotic Irish-Italian family from northern Pennsylvania. My father always taught military history, especially the Civil War and the American frontier, sharing the legends with me in my youth. Learning from him, I developed a keen interest in strategy and tactics, particularly in relation to World War II and Vietnam. When I was a junior in high school, he offered to buy me a car for graduation if I could get my college education paid for. An ROTC scholarship was the most promising option. I chose the Navy at Penn State for a mechanical engineering degree and, after seeing Top Gun, I wanted to be a fighter pilot. When I discovered that my eyes were not good enough to fly, I had to choose a different path and luckily became a Navy Deep Sea Diver.
I was fascinated by what I saw and heard in films like An Officer and a Gentleman and Top Gun.
It's hard to pick the most memorable part. It all began in the snowy winter of 1990 in Newport, Rhode Island, at the Surface Warfare Officer School. From there I was sent to the US Navy Diving and Salvage Training Center in Panama City, Florida. The only type of diving I had done at this point was snorkeling, so I had no idea what I was signing up for. Learning how to be a hardhat rescue diver from this specialized group of professionals was one of the best experiences of my life. It created a pride and bond in me with all Navy divers past, present and future. A connection that can only be created through a deep understanding of the "extreme" work, where the life of the divers on the ground depends on each member above and below the water line. I also gained a sincere appreciation for preventative maintenance and the ability to adapt, adapt and overcome. It served me well on my first ship, the USS Preserver (ARS-8), when we rescued America's promise in the Chesapeake Bay and towed a decommissioned submarine from Norfolk through the Panama Canal.
Although I thoroughly enjoyed serving with overseas units as a staff officer, I would have to say my favorite time was every time I worked side by side with fellow Navy Deep Sea Divers. Being a Navy diver has been and always will be a part of my identity.

My American heroes are all American servicemen and women who have served in combat on the front lines. Beyond that I would have to say Abraham Lincoln, Teddy Roosevelt, Chris Kyle and Carl Brashear. I admire anyone who has given the ultimate sacrifice and/or put themselves in harm's way for the greater good.
Did you have first responders or military in your family growing up? And did they inspire you to serve?
My uncle was a brigadier general in the army. He's definitely someone I looked up to as a kid.
